British doctor jailed for 90 sexual assaults on his patients
A British doctor has been convicted of 90 cases of sexual assault against a number of women who attended his clinic for medical examinations.
The doctor, Manish Shah, assaulted 23 women, as well as a 15-year-old girl while working in London, performing a number of tests to satisfy his wishes and without medical need.
The court heard that he took advantage of the health status of American star Angelina Jolie and the death of English actress Jed Gowdy to scare his patients about their health.
Judge Anne Molinox described the doctor as "practicing deception taking advantage of his job", and told him that "I created stories that crept into the minds and caused fear."
She was sentenced to at least 15 years in prison.
Shah had persuaded his patients to undergo unnecessary tests between May 2009 and June 2013.
The judge told him: "Your behaviour was not only due to sexuality, but was motivated by your desire to control and sometimes humiliate the woman."
His youngest victim explained to the court that she became anxious, frightened and trembling when she could see a doctor after being assaulted by Shah.
She said that her feelings had changed towards men; she had concerns about being seen as a 'sexual object'.
The 50-year-old doctor claimed that his actions were part of "preventive medicine" procedures, but was convicted of 25 sexual assaults against six victims at The Money Medical Center.
Shah was convicted in 2018 of assaults against 18 others.
The court heard how the doctor selected specific cases from his patients because of the age or history of cancer-related illness.
Shah spoke of Angelina Jolie's removal of her breasts for fear of cancer, and asked a woman if she would prefer to examine her breasts.
Jed Gowdy told another patient that the tests were in her best interest.
The judges heard that Shah did not always wear his gloves, and that he left a patient completely naked on the examination bed.
