Algerians mark one-year anniversary of revolution
The Algerian people on Friday marked the one-year anniversary of their popular movement, with marches for the 53rd consecutive week, during which they were able to force Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign after 20 years in power but without succeeding in changing the "regime" in power since independence.
Protesters gathered Friday morning in front of the central post office building in the centre of the capital, chanting slogans such as "The people want independence" and "We will not stop."
Security barriers have been erected at the entrances to the city since Thursday evening, complicating the arrival of demonstrators from other areas to mark the anniversary, according to social media reports.
But that did not prevent Bashir, 50, from joining the capital from Ain al-Difli to "celebrate the first anniversary of the movement and renew the demands of the protest".
On February 22, 2019, thousands of Algerians marched in a massive rally against abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was paralyzed and unable to speak, for a fifth term, which he did, where he resigned on April 2nd.
